Steve Coaches Roger Daily Toward His Changeover Time Target Condition

Steve and Roger meet for at least one scheduled coaching cycle every day. A coaching cycle usually takes 20 minutes or less.

During the coaching cycles at his storyboard, Roger begins by reviewing the challenge, target condition, and the current condition that exists now. Using his experimenting record (a Starter Kata), Roger then describes his learnings from the last experiment against the current obstacle, his proposed next step (next experiment), and the predicted result from taking that step—all by responding to the coach’s series of Coaching Kata questions.

Note that Roger prepares these details in writing on his storyboard before the coaching cycle. This is important because it helps Steve to see how Roger is currently thinking about the improvement process and thus where Roger might need coaching input. The coach is trying to spot if and where the learner is not working scientifically, so that the coach can provide appropriate situational feedback. The five Coaching Kata questions are scripted, but the feedback is not.
